A plate compactor machine drives a flat steel base plate up and down at speed, so that sand, gravel and crusher dust settle into a dense layer that carries load. On site it prepares paver bedding, trench reinstatement, kerb surrounds, footing bases and patch repairs — places a roller is too large to enter and hand tamping will never finish properly. Contractors on water and sewer lines, tile work, road patching and building foundations usually buy this machine before any other compaction equipment.
Centrifugal force is the honest measure of capability. Around 15 kN suits bedding sand, paver bases and backfill in thin lifts. At 50 kN you are in another class: a sub-base reaches density in two or three passes where a light plate needs six, and pass count decides your day.
Plate size sets coverage and access together. A 520 mm plate fits between a kerb and a manhole ring; a 710 mm plate covers ground faster but will not follow a narrow reinstatement. Measure the tightest spot before you pick the widest machine.
Soil type is where most buying mistakes happen. Vibration compacts granular material — sand, gravel, crusher dust, graded aggregate — because loose grains rearrange when shaken. Cohesive clay and silty backfill hold together and must be struck instead; a vibrating plate polishes the surface and leaves the layer soft underneath. If your backfill is clay, buy a tamping rammer, not a bigger plate.
Lift thickness follows from the 300 mm depth effect both machines carry. Place material in lifts of 300 mm or less and compact each before the next goes in. Filling a 600 mm trench in one pour gives a firm crust over loose fill, and that is the failure that reopens a road six months later.
Drive comes last. A petrol engine soil compactor works anywhere with no supply; an electric motor version is quieter, cheaper per hour and the only sensible option in basements and enclosed floors. Both models below are supplied either way.
Two models, set far apart rather than overlapping. The FPC90 puts 15 kN through a 520 × 485 mm plate at 90 kg on 5 HP, with a 7 mm plate thickness. It suits paver bedding, tile work, kerb surrounds and trench reinstatement in granular fill. Ninety kilograms is about the limit for two people lifting a machine out of a trench at the end of a shift, which on a real site matters more than any brochure figure.
The SG 120D puts 50 kN through a 710 × 510 mm plate at 150 kg, also on 5 HP, with a 10 mm plate thickness. It belongs on sub-base and base layers under yards, driveways, parking areas and approach roads, where a measured lift is compacted over a large area. The thicker plate matters too: 10 mm steel wears far more slowly than 7 mm against abrasive crusher dust and recycled aggregate. Within each model the compactor machine price moves on configuration, since a petrol engine and an electric motor are not priced alike; on engine brand, because a branded engine carries a premium and repays it in spares availability; on accessories such as a paving pad or a transport wheel kit; on freight, not trivial for a 150 kg machine outside Delhi NCR; and on GST, charged over and above the quoted figure.
Paver and tile bedding. Bedding sand is compacted before laying and the blocks vibrated down after, usually with a paving pad fitted so the plate does not chip the surface. The FPC90's everyday job.
Utility trench reinstatement. Granular backfill over a water, sewer or cable line, placed and compacted in 300 mm lifts so the reinstated surface does not dish under traffic.
Sub-base under yards and hardstanding. Graded aggregate across a factory yard, parking bay or approach road, where the 710 mm plate of the SG 120D covers area quickly and 50 kN reaches density without endless passes.
The three are not competitors so much as answers to three different site conditions. A plate wins on granular material in open patches and along edges: wide contact area, forward travel, a clean finish on paver bedding. A rammer wins the moment the space narrows or the soil turns cohesive, because impact reaches clay that vibration cannot. A vibratory roller wins on area: on a continuous run of carriageway, embankment or large yard, a drum covers in an hour what a plate takes a shift to do.
